Library of what?
Idea chosen for library:
Pressed Queensland Subtropical Fauna & Flora
Inspiration for this idea came when I recently visited South America and the amazon. By pressing the leaves and flowers it allows everyone to view the physical plant and look at its beauty.
Pressed leaves and flowers are very beautiful and delicate. The pressed flowers will be kept in books.
After doing some research on libraries I discovered that:
Key Factors
- Focal Point of the community
- Library should be expressive of its community
- Clear & logical relationship and access between spaces.
With my idea for the library I wanted to have a lot of greenery in the building and take advantage of the views.
Plants inside and out, creating a lush, living, learning area. Some materials that I was thinking about using at this stage ws timber, glass and tin.
Concept 1 for design
Extent of objects?
The books will be placed in the study/ thought area and in the knowledge area only. No books will be in the contemplation area.
There will be about 300 books in these 2 spaces.
The contemplation area will be a garden located at the top of the building looking out onto the rest of the city.
This has been designed so users can go through the library and read and learn about the fauna and flora. By the time they get to the top of the building they can view the real plants and see how they integrate into the city. This space prompts users to contemplate on nature.
Location?
Location is an important factor. In our folie project we did alot of detailed site analysis and for this project I thought that the same site as the folie offered the best views and position for my library.
Location Chosen:
- High visability from both city and new farm
- close to schools ( All Hallows)
- Within walking distance to public transport in the valley

Views are obtained down both sides of the river.
Greenery of site is a dominant feature, this influenced the selection of books in my library.
Program?
This diagram was a basic drawing after thinking about the spaces. I then went on to do a matrix and bubble diagrams to develop how the program should fit together in the library.
I wanted to create moments of engagement between people and the books. I wanted to evoke ideas, emotions and memories that these moments can create. In all spaces I wanted the user to experience both the books and gardens in a sensory expereience.
